1 oz Gold Bar
$4,197.40 one troy ounce of gold, at spot
$134.95 per gram of pure gold
Gold spot $4,197.40/oz · updated
Quick answer: A 1 oz gold bar holds one troy ounce of gold, which is 31.1035 grams. At the live gold price of $4,197.40 per troy ounce, the gold in it is worth $4,197.40. That is its value at spot. A seller's price will be higher by whatever premium the seller adds, so the number you pay is the spot value plus that premium, and you can work it out yourself before you buy.
What a 1 oz bar is
The name is a weight. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, which is heavier than the regular ounce used for food and mail. The regular ounce is 28.3495 grams, so a troy ounce is 9.7 percent heavier. This matters for anyone who weighs a bar on a kitchen scale, because the scale's ounce is the lighter one. Our gold bar weight guide sets out the conversion for every size.
A typical retail 1 oz bar is minted, which means it is struck from a blank by a maker and stamped with the maker's name, the weight and the fineness. The fineness on minted bars is commonly .9999, which is 99.99 percent gold. Costco's listing for a PAMP Suisse 1 oz bar gives .9999, and Augusta's page lists 1 oz bars among its offerings. A bar marked below .9999 holds slightly less gold than its weight suggests, so the value in our price table is the gold at pure weight, and a bar of lower fineness is worth a little less.
Many 1 oz bars are sold sealed in a card with an assay certificate, which the trade calls "in assay." Costco's listing uses the phrase "New in Assay." The card keeps the certificate with the bar and shows the weight and fineness the maker states. Do not open the card unless you have a reason, since a bar out of its packaging can be harder to resell as new. Our guide to PAMP Suisse gold bars shows how to read the design, serial number and card for one maker.
Because it holds a full ounce, the 1 oz bar is the size that the price headlines refer to. When someone says gold is at a price, they mean the price of one troy ounce, and this bar holds exactly that much.
Bar or coin at one ounce
At a full ounce, you can choose a bar or a coin, and the gold content is equal. A 1 oz bar is stamped with its weight, fineness and maker. A 1 oz coin is struck by a mint, carries a design and a face value, and may be recognized by more buyers on sight. Coins listed by Augusta include the American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, Austrian Philharmonic and American Buffalo.
What changes is the seller's addition. Premiums differ between sellers and between products, and we do not print any seller's. The honest way to compare is to get a written total for each and subtract the spot value from it. Our gold bar vs gold coin page goes through premium, size, recognition and resale, with a table by purpose. If you want a quick view, the points are these:
- A bar gives you a plain piece with the weight on it and often a sealed certificate.
- A coin gives you a mint's design and a face value, and may be known to more buyers.
- Neither is the cheaper choice by default. Get both quotes before you pick.
Where a 1 oz bar is sold
Costco. Costco lists gold bars online for members, and the listings we read on 2026-10-09 included a PAMP Suisse 1 oz bar. Costco's page says it "may be available in your local warehouse," and the listings set limits on how many a member can buy, which change over time. We print no price for it. Our Costco gold bars guide covers the listing, shipping and return policy.
Online dealers and phone dealers. Specialist sellers list 1 oz bars at their own prices. Augusta lists 1 oz and 10 oz gold bars, but Augusta states a $50,000 minimum for cash and IRA purchases, and a single 1 oz bar costs about $4,197.40 at spot, so it is not a place to buy one bar. See the note at the end of this page.
Local coin shops. A shop near you lets you see the bar and ask about buy-back face to face. Prices vary by shop, and so do policies.
Banks. We looked and found no page on a large US bank's site offering a gold bar for sale. CIBC in Canada lists gold bars in 1 oz and 1 kg sizes on its own page, and Raiffeisen in Switzerland lists bars from 1 g to 1 kg. Those are examples from other countries, and the where to buy gold bars guide compares every channel on what you get and how you sell later.
Checking the quote
Work through a quote in three steps. First, take the $4,197.40 spot value above. Second, subtract it from the price a seller gives you for a 1 oz bar, including shipping, insurance and tax if any. What is left is the seller's addition to the gold. Third, ask what the seller would pay to buy the bar back, because the gap between the two prices is part of the real cost of owning it.
The checker on our gold bar price page does the first two steps for any size. It shows the difference in dollars and as a share of spot. For an idea of how buy and sell prices differ, our how much a gold bar is worth page has an example table. Both are labelled as examples and are not quotes from any seller.
Then check the bar itself when it arrives. Compare the serial on the bar with the serial on the card, confirm the weight and fineness, and keep the packaging sealed. The steps are in our how to buy gold bars guide.
Storing a 1 oz bar
A 1 oz bar is small, about the size of a credit card in a blister, as Costco's listing for the smaller 10 g bar puts it, and it is easy to lose or damage. Decide where it will live before it arrives. A safe deposit box is one option, but the FDIC says box contents are not insured by FDIC deposit insurance, so ask your insurance agent about coverage whatever you choose. Keep the certificate separate from the bar, and record the serial number somewhere safe.
What this can't tell you
This page can't tell you what a seller will charge for a 1 oz bar today, what anyone would pay to buy yours back, or where the price goes next. It can't tell you whether your bank sells bars, because policies differ by bank and change over time. What it gives you is the spot value, the arithmetic, and the questions to ask.
FAQ
How much does a 1 oz gold bar cost?
The gold in it is worth $4,197.40 at today's spot price, and a seller adds a premium on top, so the price you pay is higher. Nobody's premium is printed here. Subtract the spot value from a written quote to see what the seller adds.
How many grams are in a 1 oz gold bar?
There are 31.1035 grams in a troy ounce. A regular ounce is 28.3495 grams, so the troy ounce is 9.7 percent heavier. Use a scale that reads grams and compare against the marked weight, remembering that sealed packaging adds some weight of its own.
Is a 1 oz gold bar pure gold?
Minted bars are commonly marked .9999, which means 99.99 percent gold. A bar marked lower holds slightly less gold than its weight suggests. Read the fineness stamped on the bar and printed on its certificate, and match them.
Can I buy a 1 oz gold bar from a bank?
We looked and found no page on a large US bank's site offering one. Banks in Canada and parts of Europe do list bars, according to their own pages. Check your own bank's current policy, and ask about buy-back before you pay.
Should I open the assay card on a new bar?
Only when a dealer needs to inspect it. The sealed card keeps the certificate and bar together, and an opened card can make resale harder. Check the serial and weight through the window first, and keep the paperwork in a separate safe place.
